Caught my Eye

October 27th, 2010

I’ve been thinking a lot about artifacts that are interesting in their own right and also say something about hands. This collection of photographs of World Series Gloves is a great example (with a nice interface for examining each glove up close).  Also–their shapes are completely surprising. Look at Ray Hayworth’s 1934 glove. Who could catch anything in that?

I have to credit Stefan Fatsis with helping me understand the relationship between a baseball player and his glove (plus he wrote a book about Scrabble, so he’s my kind of sports reporter). You can read an excerpt from his essay here.
